About ‘pub Papeneiland, anno 1641, Amsterdam’ by Aldo Sanso

Café 't Papeneiland is the oldest pub in the Netherlands. The national monument that is evidenced by the facade stone built in 1641 is a typical Jordanian pub where time seems to have stood still for 100 years.
The 'Café Papeneiland', founded in 1642, hides' in its cellar an old escape route under the canal in front of the 'Papen' of the shelter church the Posthoorn on Prinsengracht 7. After the alteration of 1578 Roman Catholics were no longer allowed to profess their faith openly.
