Winter is a hard time for the water rails, especially when the waters where they live are frozen over. The rails then depend on finding remaining water holes where, with a bit of luck, they can find food.
The otherwise shy and secretive birds, which are usually only heard and rarely seen, hope for prey at a small water inlet that keeps the water free of ice.
The photograph is convincing because of its richness of detail, exciting composition and particularly beautiful colours that harmonise with each other.
