The bald eagle is an imposing, very large bird of prey ('flying door') of wetlands. Feeds on fish, waterfowl and also carrion, especially when there is ice. For a long time a rare winter visitor, but nowadays even breeding bird in the Netherlands in increasing numbers (2018: 14 pairs). Slow, deep wing beat, but often hovers on thermals in spring, summer and autumn. Usually solitary, but sea eagles may concentrate in places with plenty of food.
