Elswout was founded in the middle of the 17th century by Carel du Moulin, but the Amsterdammer Gabriel Marcelis completed the first construction of Elswout. Over the centuries many great architects have worked on the ever-changing architecture and landscape styles. Pieter Post, for example, the architect of the Palace on the Dam, probably also contributed to the design. Over the years, the style of the buitenplaats changed along with the changing trends; from Dutch baroque gardens to landscape parks.
