The Zeeland Bridge, which connects with North Beveland Schouwen-Duiveland is not part of the Delta Works. The building was commissioned by the province of Zeeland and not commissioned by Rijkswaterstaat. The reason for the construction had nothing to do with the safety of Zeeland, but more with the accessibility. An added bonus was that the Delta Works dams most (almost) Islands were linked. The Oosterschelde, however, was still a huge gap between North Beveland and Schouwen-Duiveland. The province of Zeeland wanted a good north-south connection that was not dependent on the conclusion of the Oosterscheldedam. Around 1963, it was thought that the Oosterschelde would be dammed. This project could only be completed in 1978. Ultimately, it would even take until 1986 before the barrier was opened. Until 1965, the only way to cross the Oosterschelde stabbing the ferry between Zierikzee and Kats. The ferry could however not the traffic.
