About ‘Young Girl in a Gold-Trimmed Cloak, Rembrandt van Rijn’

Young Girl in a Gold-Trimmed Cloak, Rembrandt van Rijn (1632)

Rembrandt's "Young Girl in a Gold-Trimmed Cloak" (1632) is a tronie - an imaginative character study rather than a formal portrait—depicting a young girl in sixteenth-century inspired clothing. The painting showcases Rembrandt's masterful technique: he modeled the flesh tones with smooth blended strokes, rendered individual brushstrokes in the blond hair, and applied thick paint highlights to the decorative gold embroidery. The girl's direct gaze and subtle body twist, combined with strategic lighting from the upper left, create a vivid sense of personality and presence despite her restrained pose.

Though the sitter's identity remains uncertain, the same model appears in at least three other paintings by Rembrandt from 1632, indicating this was not a commissioned portrait but rather a work created for the open market. The painting's significance extends beyond its artistic merit: after being stolen from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in 1975, it was recovered a year later and sold at auction in 1986 for $10.5 million - a record price for a Rembrandt at that time.
