About ‘You never walk alone’ by Arjen Roos

"You never walk alone" is a work that goes beyond the canvas; it is a journey through light and shadow, a path followed by two figures - a metaphor for support and camaraderie that is universally recognisable. Inspired by the Rotterdam or Feijenoord anthem of the same name, sung by Lee Towers, it is a visual echo of the powerful message the song carries.

In this artwork, I lead the viewer through a labyrinth of stairs and surfaces, an architectural illusion reminiscent of Escher's works. The two figures, central to the sculpture, symbolise the connection we share. Their silhouettes against the light invite us to reflect on our own life journey and the people who accompany us.

The choice of black-and-white tones emphasises the contradictions in life, while the light at the end of the tunnel suggests hope and guidance. It is a play of contrast and lighting that not only challenges the eyes, but also touches the heart.

This artwork captures the imagination of anyone who has ever felt supported, or offered that very support. It is a timeless reminder that, regardless of life's challenges, no one is alone.
