The rose is an ambiguous symbol; on the one hand it denotes eternity (with heavenly perfection, fullness, divine power, the ideal world, the secret of life, the unknown, beauty and joy) and on the other hand it denotes transient human passions (with lust, the joy of wine, illusion and enchantment). She is at once life and death, fertility and virginity.
For the Christians, it reminds them of paradise. Red roses signify love, charity; on Golgotha they spring from Christ's wounds. The white rose symbolises innocence, purity and chastity; on Christmas scenes, white roses bloom in winter and point to Mary as the Queen of Heaven. In her litany Mary is invoked as the 'mystic rose'.
