Rapeseed (Brassica Napus) is native to the eastern Mediterranean, where the oil was used for consumption and as lamp oil. Rapeseed is found in India as early as 2000 BC. The Romans were familiar with the plant. The plant has been found in Central Europe since the fourteenth century. From the 17th century onwards, a larger area is cultivated with rapeseed and it is an important oil crop in Europe.
