This is a work with something to discover. At first glance, it may look like an abstract painting. Soon enough , especially when looking through the hairs of the eye, it turns out to be a crudely painted map of the world. But on closer inspection, that entire world map turns out to be composed of countless pieces of the map of the Netherlands.
I created this map by defining that map of the Netherlands as a brush in Photoshop. I then started painting, with the brush deriving its colour from the underlying world map. Varying the rotation and size of the brush naturally created a lively and colourful map.
To be clear: this is not an ode to the VOC mentality from the country's colonial past. But rather to the wanderlust of the Dutch. A nod to the phenomenon that no matter which corner of the planet you are in, you will always meet fellow countrymen.
And above all, of course, it is also just a joke. Hang it on the wall and wait and see how long it takes for visitors to get the joke!
My work can be found in the border regions of photography, painting and computer visuals. With my company 3Develop I do work in commission but I use the same techniques, skills and software to make free work.
