At the very west end of the Vliehors, a vast expanse of sand on Vlieland also known as the Sahara of the North. There, a number of weathered wooden poles stand in the sand or in the surf - depending on the tide.They were once placed as breakwaters or as markers for the coastline, perhaps also to prevent sand drift. Precise info is hard to find (which may make it even more mystical), but in any case they are decades old and are a landmark for anyone visiting the Vliehors.
