The European wolf or Eurasian wolf (Canis lupus lupus) is a subspecies of wolf (Canis lupus). This subspecies occurs from Spain, Germany and Scandinavia to the Chinese steppes, and also includes some populations previously considered a separate subspecies, as the Iberian wolf.
Originally, the European wolf lived in most of Eurasia. The southern boundary of its range ran through the Black Sea, the Caucasus and the Himalayas. During the time of Napoleon, this subspecies still lived in the Netherlands, where it returned around the year 2000.
