New Year's Eve descends over Oberstdorf like a soft veil. The roofs of the houses wear heavy, white caps of freshly fallen snow, and warm light streams out of every window into the cold night - as if people wanted to respond to winter with small, golden flames. The church rises above the town, awake and silent at the same time, its tower a familiar pointer in the flow of time.
Between the streets, which run like bright threads through the wintry fabric of the town, there is a special expectation in the air. Snow crystals dance in the light of the lanterns, and the valley seems to breathe softly. The Allgäu Alps stand like protective giants all around, their slopes blurring in the twilight, as if they too were listening to the soft crackling of the dawning night.
A single firework unfolds above the snow-covered gardens, a brief star that illuminates the darkness and transforms the moment into a shimmering promise. For a moment, the whole of Europe seems far away - and at the same time very close - because here, in the heart of the Allgäu, silence and festivity come together. Oberstdorf lights up as if to bid farewell to the old year and welcome the new one with open arms.
