About "Winter hydrangea with ice crystals in brown-terracotta colouring"

by Silva Wischeropp

About the artwork

This wintry, floral nature motif was photographed on 31 December 2016 with the NIKON D90 camera (lens: SIGMA 18.0-50.0 mm f/2.8).

The subsequent processing and toning in brown-terracotta tones gives the motif a warm, harmonious image effect. The monochrome colouring gives the image an elegant and timeless atmosphere.

Hydrangeas (Hydrangea) are a genus of plants in the hydrangea family (Hydrangeaceae).
Varieties of some of its species are popular ornamental shrubs. The best known of these in Central Europe is the garden hydrangea.

The striking feature of its inflorescences is not so much the small fertile flowers but rather the infertile show flowers with large, coloured or white sepals at the edge of the inflorescence; in the cultivated forms of the garden hydrangea, all the flowers have enlarged sepals and are infertile.
Hydrangea species are woody plants: Semi-shrubs, shrubs, small trees or lianas. There are both evergreen and deciduous species. The hairiness can also vary greatly depending on the species.

The leaves are opposite, rarely whorled. In most species, the leaf blade is simple, large and serrated at the edge. However, there are also species with smooth leaf margins or pinnately lobed leaves. Stipules are absent.
