The winter sun barely makes it over the horizon before it’s already casting long shadows across the field. That low angle light is what makes mornings like this so rewarding. Here, I framed the photo so the bare trees would cut across the sky in all directions, their thin branches reaching like veins into the pale atmosphere. Shooting directly into the light isn’t always forgiving, but in this case, the starburst effect from the sun added a kind of stillness I liked.
What stands out to me most is how black-and-white simplifies everything. Without color, you’re left with shapes, contrasts, and balance. The trunks become dark columns, grounding the frame, while the shadows stretch out toward the open space. The balance between light and shade is delicate here, especially on the grass, which shows just enough texture to anchor the bottom of the image.
It’s a quiet scene, but not lifeless. There’s a softness to it, even with the cold edges of winter showing through.
