About the artwork

The best known three mills of the Schermer Mill Complex are located near Schermerhorn. Lower mill D, the middle one of the three, is set up as the Museum Mill. Lower mill C stands to the west, Upper mill E to the east of it.

There used to be six mills in this part of the Schermer: two lower, two middle and two upper mills. From the inner basin these pumped the polder water, which had been pumped up by the 14 polder mills, in three stages to the Schermerringvaart.

With the so-called jacking up of the mills in 1850, the three-stage grinding wheel was converted into a two-stage grinding wheel. The middle mills C and D then became sub-mills. The superfluous bottom mills A and B were rebuilt in Soest and Arkel (of which the latter still exists).

In popular speech the complex near Schermerhorn is still called "the mill race" but in fact it is an incomplete double race. There are plans to restore it in the future. To this end, the Bovenmolen F, which was demolished in 1937, must be rebuilt.
