Windmill in the stillness of the evening light by SR Blaauw

This image centres on a classic Dutch windmill, its silhouette standing out powerfully against a soft, cool evening sky. As the light fades, the shapes actually become more pronounced: the sails cut sharply through the air and are framed by layered clouds. The houses surrounding the windmill lie in deep shadow, which heightens the contrast and draws the viewer’s attention entirely to the iconic focal point.

In the foreground, the still water creates a reflection that extends the image and lends a sense of depth. The reflection of the windmill and the light on the water adds a subtle dynamism, whilst the horizontal lines of sky and water radiate tranquillity. The cool colour palette – featuring shades of blue, green and silver – lends the whole scene a serene, almost melancholic atmosphere.

This image was captured at a moment when the last of the daylight was slowly giving way to evening. It was precisely this transition, in which contrast and simplicity dominate, that provided the inspiration. By deliberately underexposing the image, the emphasis is placed on form and composition rather than colour.

In an interior, this work brings a sense of tranquillity and depth. It fits perfectly into a modern or minimalist space where tranquillity and balance are key, and will immediately appeal to lovers of the Dutch landscape.
