Polders are low-lying areas of land surrounded by dikes where water levels are controlled to create agricultural land or protect against flooding. The Netherlands is known for its extensive polder system.
The Doeshofmolen is a wooden octagonal ground sailor east of Leiderdorp in the green heart of the Netherlands. The mill was built in 1830 for the drainage of the Huis ter Doespolder. In 1963, the Doeshof mill was purchased by the Rijnlandse Molenstichting, which restored the mill to make it operational. The mill is now regularly used as an auxiliary and emergency pumping station.
