I know people who are not fond of them: modern windmills, also known as wind turbines. But for a photographer, they are beautiful objects to capture on film. Especially in combination with vast landscapes and spectacular skies.
These windmills are on the Philipsdam, photographed from the north coast of the island of Sint Philipsland in the Dutch province of Zeeland. In the foreground we see a nature reserve with creeks and low vegetation: the Rumoirt marshes with the Slaak, an outlet of the Oosterschelde estuary, behind it.
From the threatening skies, a lot of rain would fall that day, so much so that football matches and car races had to be temporarily halted. But in this photo, they formed a perfect backdrop for the otherworldly-looking giants.
