Pollard willows stand on the shore, at the side of the water. The trees take up most of the artwork, but still leave room for the bridge of wood in the background. A picturesque, typically Dutch scene.
A pollard willow is a willow which is cut down a few years after it was planted, at a height of approximately 1.5 - 2 m. The tree is then pruned every 3-6 years. Every 3-6 years the tree is pruned by removing the new branches. The thickening at the base of the shoots forms the knot from which the pollard willow takes its name.
The pollard willow is traditionally planted on a large scale in low-lying areas along roads and ditches. They provided geriefwood and strengthened roadsides and banks with their roots. In order to preserve the characteristic rows of pollard willows in the landscape as a landscape element, they should be pruned regularly.
