Willem van de Velde the Younger, Ships at the Roadstead, c. 1658
Willem van de Velde the Younger often painted seascapes with a low horizon, windless weather and large piles of clouds contrasting against the blue sky. The flapping sails create an atmospheric play of light and shadow. At the center here is a richly decorated yacht with the Dutch flag. Around it, cargo ships are anchored and a few rowing boats sail, which are used to transport passengers to and from the shore.
