Groningens Ontzet or the Groningen Relief (also called: Achtentwintigsten and Bommen Berend[1]) is celebrated that the province of Groningen, and not only Groningen, had withstood the siege by Bernhard von Galen, bishop of Münster in the disaster year 1672.[2]
On 17 August of that year (28 August according to the Gregorian calendar), and after a siege of barely a month, the bishop ordered his troops to withdraw.
The Bishop was (and is) popularly known as Bommen Berend because of the frequent use of cannon shot bombs, the most modern weaponry for the time, which caused considerable damage within the city walls.
