Unfortunately, the wild orchid is increasingly hard to find. Fortunately, in this field in Drenthe, there are still a whole bunch of these beautifully purple and lilac-coloured flowers.
The orchid family (Orchidaceae) is the most extensive plant genus on earth. More than 18,000 species are known. Orchids belong to the monocotyledons (monocotyledonae or Liliopsida).
In the Netherlands, wild species are found in the dunes, in meadows and along forest edges, which strongly depends on the soil composition, acidity or lime content of the soil. Thus, there are species, which can only be found on moderately acid soil or, on the contrary, lime-rich soil.
This picture is also beautiful as wallpaper.
