In the Savelsbos, a beautiful nature reserve in South Limburg, a sea of wild garlic blooms every spring. This wild plant with white flowers and green leaves covers the forest floor and releases a soft garlic scent into the air. It’s as if the ground rolls out a white carpet between the old trees. Wild garlic prefers to grow in shady, moist environments, and the Savelsbos provides just the right conditions. In spring, hikers are drawn to the forest to admire the blooming carpet, which is only visible for a short time before it fades away. For the ecosystem in the Savelsbos, wild garlic is an important plant that not only attracts people but also many insects that feed on the nectar of its flowers.
