Wide panorama of the Colca Canyon, Peru.
Colca Canyon is the gorge of the Colca in southern Peru. It lies about 160 kilometers from Arequipa and is more than twice as deep as the Grand Canyon in America. On the other hand, the walls are not as straight as in the Grand Canyon.
The strange shapes of the landscape (terraces) and the two large gorges make this place easy to find on satellite photos. The Colka Valley is a colourful area with villages discovered by the Spaniards. However, the local population still adheres to the old traditions and lifestyles and therefore still makes use of the agricultural terraces.
