Dike breaches generally occur at weak spots in the dike that can be caused by poor maintenance or by seepage, which washes away material under and/or from the dike. When a dike fails, the water swirls with great force into the land behind it, creating deep swirl holes (wiel, waai, waal or weel). Due to the depth of the wheel, the dike cannot be repaired at the same location. Because the new piece of dike was built around the wheel, the Westfriese Zeedijk gradually took on a winding course. The twists and turns in the dikes often refer to old dike breaches.
