The Nieuwegracht was realised between 1390 and 1393, together with the Kromme Nieuwegracht, the Drift and the Plompetorengracht, through a sparsely built-up area within the city walls, probably to improve the drainage of the area in preparation for building construction. Like the Oudegracht, the Nieuwegracht has the wharfs and wharf cellars typical of Utrecht almost along its entire length. This photo was taken in the evening of 1 September 2013. Dark Utrecht.
