Weimar is a city in the German state of Thuringia. It is known for the era of Weimar Classicism, a humanist cultural movement. The Goethe and Schiller Monument in front of the German National Theatre commemorates the two poets who lived in the city. Goethe's residence, a baroque-style building, is now home to the Goethe National Museum. The Schiller Museum is located next to Schiller's house. The Bauhaus Museum displays works by the architect Walter Gropius.
Goethe lived and worked in the house on the Frauenplan for almost 50 years after moving in as a tenant in 1782. Before that, the garden house on the edge of the park on the Ilm was Goethe's first own residence in Weimar from 1776.
