A little further down the dike, Wijdenes still has a small village harbour on Zuiderdijk, which was restored in 1980. The little refuge harbour -the lifebuoy hanging there probably recalls that function- is little more than a jetty. A harbour of refuge or port of refuge is a port where ships can enter in case of emergency. Facilities are usually minimal. Originally, this is a fishing harbour from the time before the Afsluitdijk. Fishing was an important source of income for West Friesland back then. The harbour silted up and was no longer used, until the Recreatieschap Westfriesland breathed new life into it and put it to use as a refuge harbour.
