The vulture falcon is the largest among the falcons, with a size of 55-60 cm (5-69 in) and a wingspan of 125-135 cm (5-39 in).[3] As with most birds of prey, the female is larger than the male. The plumage color varies from grayish brown to gray in the subarctic, to almost snow white far into the Arctic (e.g., northern Greenland). The beard stripe is very narrow and mostly absent in the white birds. In adult northern European birds, the upper side is gray with a dark transverse banding; the underside is whitish with dark spots. Young birds are solid on top and light underneath with dark longitudinal spots.
