Our journey in the Azores began on Faial. The Azores are a Portuguese archipelago located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, and Faial is about the middle island as far as you can speak of it. The islands belong to a mountain range that lies below the Atlantic Ocean and rises above the water in a few places, such as here. All the islands are therefore mountainous and they are volcanic.
In the middle of Faial is a large volcano, the Cabeço Gordo. On our first day, we decided to go up the volcano. The caldeira (crater) is beautifully green and we wanted to see that for ourselves. We left in fine weather and at a viewpoint halfway up the mountain the view was beautiful, but near the top the weather turned. It turned cold and especially very foggy.
And when we had climbed the steps to the edge of the caldeira, we literally saw nothing. We could see a few metres around us and the rest of the world had completely disappeared. Consequently, we never saw the green caldeira. But honestly, I also like this mysterious path in the mist.
