The Mayon is an active volcano on the largest Philippine island of Luzon, about 330 kilometres southeast of the capital Manila and a few kilometres north of Legazpi. The volcano is a so-called stratovolcano of 2462 meters high with an almost perfect cone shape, which was formed as a result of many eruptions. In the last 400 years, more than 50 eruptions have been recorded, making it the most active volcano in the Philippines. The deadliest eruption was that of 1814, when some places were covered by lava and about 1200 people were killed. In an eruption in 1993, 79 people were killed and because of eruptions in 2000 and 2006, tens of thousands of people had to be evacuated. In 2009 the volcano came back to life. From December 15, 50,000 people in the immediate vicinity of the Mayon were evacuated in anticipation of a possible major eruption.
