With his painting La Grande Iza, Vlaho Bukovac began exhibiting his series of beautiful nudes at the Paris Salon in 1882. Although it looks like a typical academic realistic painting today, this female nude, with a certain sensuality, soft modelling, as well as a provocative attitude, open to the viewer, at that time it meant a refreshing break from the inanimate and conventional nudes usually seen in Salons. Bukovac liked to paint women naked like Iza.
Here the girl lies back willingly and the artist displays her hips, belly, torso, breasts and armpits.
Bukovac used a Parisian courtesan, who also posed for him on later occasions, as a model for his masterpiece; he would use other models for the details.
The changes in the painting (the maid was given an orange headband and a vest) were not made by the painter, but by an unknown restorer.
Vlaho Bukovac, actually Biagio Faggioni (Cavtat, July 4, 1855 - Prague, April 23, 1922) was a Croatian painter. He worked in various styles, including realism and impressionism.
