Icarus of Ikaros (Greek: Ἴκαρος) is a figure from Greek mythology, known from the flight together with his father Daedalus.
Because Icarus and Daedalus are held captive in Crete by King Minos, Daedalus devises a way to escape: he builds wings from a wooden frame, set with feathers in an arch fastened with wax. Because the wax can melt, Daedalus warns Icarus not to fly too high and close to the sun, but also not too low, because the wings would become too heavy from the seawater. However, in his enthusiasm Icarus becomes reckless; he flies too high so that the wax melts anyway and he crashes.
According to the myth he crashed into the sea, but in this work of art the boy is depicted naked while falling on the rocks after his failed flight.
Vlaho Bukovac, actually Biagio Faggioni (Cavtat, July 4, 1855 - Prague, April 23, 1922) was a Croatian painter. He worked in various styles, including realism and impressionism.
