This famous painting was formerly known as "The Couresans", a name derived from romantic literature. The picture actually shows two ladies showing clear signs of wealth, nobility and honesty, starting with their elegant clothes and fashionable hairstyles.
Only recently has it been possible to establish that the painting is actually missing the upper part corresponding to the painting named "Hunting on the Lagoon" no in the Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, showing the lily in the vase resting on the parapet in the Correr section. Clearly, then, the photograph shows two ladies waiting for their respective consorts to return from hunting.
Vittore Carpaccio (Venice, c. 1455 - Capodistria, 1525/1526) was a Venetian painter. He became best known for the nine paintings about the legend of Saint Ursula. His paintings were painted mainly in red and white and belong to the High Renaissance.
