In tradition, each evangelist has been assigned a distinct animal that is used in iconography as a symbol of the evangelist. In the case of Saint Mark, it is a winged lion.
When European weaponry and heraldry emerged, the Republic of Venice chose this lion of Saint Mark, the symbol of one of the city's two patterns, as its emblem and heraldic animal. This lion often carries an opened book with the words: "PAX TIBI MARCE EVANGELISTA MEVS" Peace be with you, St. Mark, my evangelist.
John Mark, according to the New Testament, was a companion of the apostles Paul and Barnabas. His name is compound: John is a Jewish name, Mark a Roman one. According to tradition, he was Mark the evangelist, the author of the Gospel according to Mark.
Vittore Carpaccio (Venice, c. 1455 - Capodistria, 1525/1526) was a Venetian painter. He became best known for the nine paintings about the legend of Saint Ursula. His paintings were painted mainly in red and white and belong to the High Renaissance.
