View across the floodplain of a river, Jan van Goyen, c. 1644 oil on panel, h 31.3cm × w 44.6cm.
Jan van Goyen painted the Dutch landscape in all its facets: from towns and villages to the sea and rivers, from hilly dunes and moraines to flat polders and floodplains. Here, some people on the left in the foreground look out over the vast river landscape from a small hill. Van Goyen gave exceptional space to the imposing cloudy sky above the low landscape.
