The harbour of Marken, with the harbour houses in the background and the moored ships. Marken is a former island in the former Zuiderzee, and since 1959 connected to the mainland by a dike. The harbour was built at the beginning of the 19th century for the fishing boats used by the Marker fleet. Until the closure of the Zuiderzee, Marken was mainly dependent on fishing. Nowadays, the village is mainly a tourist attraction. A ferry sails every 45 minutes to Volendam on the other side and back.
