The Rapenburg is the most famous canal in the Dutch city of Leiden.
The canal runs from the intersection Breestraat-Kort Rapenburg-Noordeinde to the bridge at Doezastraat, from which point the water continues as the Steenschuur and flows along the Van der Werfpark. Originally the Rapenburg ran to the Galgewater (Old Rhine). The Kort Rapenburg, the section between Noordeinde and Galgewater, was covered in 1911 to accommodate increasing traffic.
Until 1389 Rapenburg was a moat and the southern edge of the centre of Leiden.
Already in the 17th and 18th centuries Rapenburg was called the most beautiful street in Europe by Professor Johannes Polyander van Kerckhoven.Gerardus Johannes Bos (Leiden, Holland, Netherlands April 9, 1825 - May 13, 1898) was a Dutch painter, etcher, lithographer and lithographer.
Bos held many social positions. He was director of the Leidsche Schilder- en Tekenacademie Ars Aemula Naturae, director of the Genootschap Mathesis Scientiarum Genitrix, deacon of the Evangelische Luthersche Gemeente, and regent of the Evangelische Wees- en Oudenliedenhuis.
