View of the Morteratsch glacier
The Morteratsch Glacier is a glacier in the Bernina Massif located in the Swiss canton of Graubünden. The Bernina Massif is a highly glaciated mountain range with peaks up to over 4,000 meters. Several snow-covered peaks can be seen from the Morteratsch Glacier, including Piz Bernina and Piz Palü. With a length of 6.4 km, an average thickness of 75 m and an area of 15.3 km² (data from 2008), the Morteratsch Glacier is the largest glacier in the Bernina Massif. It is, after the Pasterze and the Gepatschferner, the third largest and in terms of volume (1.2 km³, 2008) the largest glacier in the eastern Alps.
