The Millau Viaduct (Viaduc de Millau), which carries the A75 motorway over the River Tarn in southern France, was designed by Michel Virlogeux and built by Norman Foster, and opened on 14 December 2004 by the then French President Jacques Chirac. At 2460 m, the viaduct is the longest cable-stayed bridge in the world, and with a maximum pier height of 343 m, it is also the largest bridge in the world, the tallest structure in France and the tallest bridge in Europe.
