The first planting was in the winter of 1995. Each year a number of hectares are added so that the forest is now about 90 hectares large. The aim is to extend this to 120 hectares. This will create a buffer between the city and the creek area behind it.
The forest gets the name Geuzenbos because it is located in the area that was flooded by the Ostend Geuzen as part of their battle plan against the Spanish conqueror.
