Odysseus or Ulixes is a figure in the ancient myth cycle surrounding the Trojan War. He is the king of the island of Ithaca, son of Laërtes and Antikleia, a cunning Greek captain, inventor of the ruse with the wooden horse through which the war is won after ten years, after which he wanders around for another ten years before returning home. He is an important character in Homer's Iliad, while in Homer's Odyssey he is the main character. Polyphemos or Polyphemus is a figure from Greek mythology. He is a cyclops; son of the sea god Poseidon and the sea nymph Thoosa. Polyphemos lives on an island in a cave, where he keeps a flock of sheep, which he grazes daily. When the heros Odysseus and his crew set foot ashore, they are held captive in the cave, whose entrance is closed off by a heavy rock. Every day, the cyclops eats some of the men. Odysseus has brought a guest gift for Polyphemos: wine. In gratitude, Polyphemos promises to eat Odysseus last. Alberto Savinio (Athens, 25 August 1891 - Florence, 5 May 1952) was an Italian artist.
