The steppenzebra is a medium sized, muscular horse with large ears. The legs are relatively short and firm. The stripe pattern differs per subspecies, area and individual. In all animals, wide, black stripes run vertically over the body. On the hooves and trunk are horizontal black stripes. The face and the stiff mane are also striped. The northern populations have wide, sharply defined stripes, while the southern populations have narrower stripes and fewer stripes on the back, legs and abdomen. The tip of the muzzle, around the nose and mouth, has a black or brown spot. A broad black stripe runs along the spine, from the mane to the root of the tail.
