Two girls in the snow, Isaac Israels, c. 1890 - c. 1894 oil on panel, h 65cm × w 36cm An everyday scene in wintry Amsterdam: two warmly wrapped factory or studio girls. Israels painted them as if they stood hesitantly before him during their break. Yet this appearance of coincidence is deceptive. Both girls' poses are carefully thought out and the black and red in their scarves and jackets are exactly opposite, creating a balanced composition despite all the fleetingness.
