As my husband and I travelled through the French Alps, I kept coming across these great birds at the top of the mountain - jays or spotted nutcrackers.
They are a species of songbird and belong to the raven family. Jays are mainly found in coniferous forest areas as their distribution is closely linked to areas with spruce and stone pine trees.
So it was not surprising to meet them on our journey through the coniferous forests of the Alps, and I was able to observe these medium-sized birds landing again and again on the pines and firs and flying away again after a few minutes, as in this picture.
As it was autumn, the industrious birds were probably gathering winter stores, as they bury several thousands of seeds in the forest soil over the summer and autumn. For most of the year, the jays live in pairs or small family groups.
I see the extraordinary in the ordinary.
