The polder was officially drained on 9 September 1942. After that, the Noordoostpolder was laid out and developed at lightning speed. This created a unique agricultural area. In the early sixties, the first tulips were planted in the polder. The soil in the Noordoostpolder is particularly suitable for this. Nowadays, some 2000 hectares of tulips are planted every year. Together they produce almost 1 billion saleable bulbs. Besides tulips, lilies, gladioli and blue grapes are also grown in the Northeast Polder. In terms of surface area, the Northeast Polder is the third largest flower bulb growing area in the Netherlands.
