About ‘Tsukioka Yoshitoshi - The Old Badger’ by Peter Balan

Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839 - 1892) was a renowned 19th century Japanese ukiyo-e artist active in the Edo and Meiji eras. Yoshitoshi was known for his impressive woodblock prints, which often depicted themes from history, literature, theatre and mythology. He is considered one of the last great masters of the ukiyo-e genre and is highly regarded for his exceptional artistic contribution to Japanese printmaking. His works are characterised by a mastery of techniques, intense emotional expressiveness and a preference for sombre and dramatic subjects. Yoshitoshi's influence on Japanese art was significant, and his works are still appreciated worldwide today.
