This impressionist work shows fishing boats lined up on the banks of Trouville. They are decorated with the French flag to mark the celebration in France of the storming of the Bastille in 1789, the beginning of the French Revolution. It is a spontaneous work, painted on the beach as a direct representation of the sea. Trouville, a tourist resort on the coast of Normandy, was a popular subject for Boudin, who grew up in rural Normandy and spent most summers there painting on the beach. Trouville is a town in the French department of Seine-Maritime (region of Normandy). The town is part of the arrondissement of Le Havre. Eugene Boudin (Honfleur, 12 July 1824 - Deauville, 8 August 1898) was a French painter, draughtsman and etcher. He is mainly known for his seascapes and is considered a forerunner of Impressionism.
