About the artwork

A tribute to Wim Crouwel (1928 - 2019) he was one of the most important Dutch graphic designers of the 20th century. He created sleek designs that no one else had ever thought of and which also regularly sparked discussions. In 1963 he co-founded the design agency Total Design. From 1964 he was responsible for the design of the posters, catalogues and exhibitions of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. In 1967 he designed the typeface New Alphabet, a letter which embraces the limitations of the cathode ray tube and thus consists of only horizontals and verticals. Other designs of his are Fodor and Gridnik. Besides working as a graphic designer he was also active in the educational and cultural circuit. From 1985 to 1993 he was director of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. He also made a controversial design for the telephone book, putting all the letters in lower case (without capitals) and the telephone number in front of the name. A design by Crouwel that is generally known in the Netherlands is that for the numeral postage stamps that were in use from 1976 to 2002.
